a new record harvest is expected, but weather decides

Buenos Aires, November 7th. Today, officials from the Ag-Industry Secretariat anticipated that a national harvest of 140 million metric tons is expected for this 2018/19 season, a volume that would mark a new record in the Argentine farming history.

In the case of the wheat, for the first time, harvest would surpass 20 MMT, from previous 18.5 MMT. In the case of summer crops (maize and soybean), after a severe drought that cut the output last campaign, this season if there is no weather bad surprises, farmers would collect 49.7 MMT of corn and 54.2 of soybean.

The expected average yield of corn would round 7,200 kg/ha, the soybean 3,100 kg/ha and the wheat 3.350 kg/hectare. “We are sure that this is the path to collect 150 MMT in the next years”, the Agricultural deputy secretary, Luis Urriza, said during his presentation. The public cheered the notice that wheat output will reach 20.1 million metric tons, but the chairman of the wheat chain association (ArgenTrigo), Mr. David Hughes, was cautious: “I prefer to wait until the last grain will be harvested. Today there was a frost in the south of Buenos Aires province and we don’t know how much damage it caused”, in dialogue with www.eFarmNewsAr.com. As the proverb says, Mr. Hughes doesn’t like to sell the skin before to hunt the bear.

Mr. Urriza reminded that last year, they expected a 138 MMT harvest and then, during the summer, the drought reduced it to 112 million metric tons. But, this time, it is not expected some extreme climate anomaly.

As we said in our yesterday story “Corn consumption” Mr. Urriza had to explain why they estimate a corn acreage of 9.1 million hectares this season and a harvest close to 50MMT, too much above private estimations. He said they are trying to quantify the grain that circulates by “informal” channels. Currently, over the total acreage, an 18% is chopped to silage, other 4% is grazed by cows, and other 2% is a lost area.
